On May 14-15, NES Professor Sultan Mehmood, in collaboration with Shaoda Wang, Professor at the University of Chicago, hosted a workshop on Law and Political Economy at the University of Chicago.
The workshop brought together leading scholars from Harvard University, Toulouse School of Economics, McGill University, University of Chicago, and the World Bank to present and discuss cutting-edge research in this rapidly evolving area. Among the keynote speakers were Luigi Zingales, Professor of the Chicago Booth School of Business, and Jens Ludwig, Professor of the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago.
Professor Mehmood delivered a presentation of a new paper titled "Network Effects in Democratic Reform: Evidence from Lawyers' Movement in Pakistan" and moderated a Roundtable "Island of Institutional Integrity: Independence of the Judiciary."
"We had an insightful exchange at the University of Chicago on the independence of the judiciary with Justice Babar Sattar and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of Pakistan Supreme Court; Justice Diane Pamela Wood, former Senior Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Director of the American Law Institute, and Prof. Ginsberg from Chicago Law School also offered their thought-provoking contributions!" — remarked Sultan Mehmood.
As noted by the organizers, with the increasing availability of data on judicial systems worldwide, the field of law and political economy is undergoing a significant revitalization.
