NES Professor Sultan Mehmood participated in the workshop "Building Institutional Resilience" organized by the University of Chicago. He presented his research "Network Effects in Democratic Reform: Evidence from Lawyers' Movement in Pakistan".
The core finding of this paper is that an organized civil society can serve as a catalyst for democratic reform, reducing reliance on informal justice systems while increasing participation in formal democratic institutions. Among the participants of the workshop there were a lot of distinguished interdisciplinary experts, including Roger Myerson, a professor at the University of Chicago and a Nobel Prize Winner in Economic Sciences (2007).
Sultan Mehmood has been working at the New Economic School since 2021. He holds a PhD in Economics from the Universite Paris-Dauphine. He is considered an emerging leader in the field of political economy and development.
