On January 23, NES Professor and Vice-Rector for Corporate Projects Maxim Bouev gave a talk at the webinar “Insights into Capital Management in Green Banking”. The event was hosted by Risk Insights, the pioneering force in the field of data science and sustainability in Africa, in partnership with Fusion Asset Management.
The webinar became a platform for exchanging global expertise and discussing the role of green banking in supporting sustainable economic development.
In his presentation, Maxim Bouev explored the link between climate risks and financial and banking risks. Due to global warming, the frequency of natural disasters is increasing, which poses a fiscal risk to regional and national budgets. The primary types of climate-related risks are physical risks, tied to natural disasters and their aftermath — such as assessing borrowers' physical assets and damages, and transition risks, linked to policy changes related to global climate goals. Maxim Bouev explained what challenges banks face in managing these risks, particularly through credit and market risks.
The list of participants included Alexey Lobanov, NES Visiting Professor and Former Director of Banking Regulation at the Bank of Russia. In his talk, he highlighted the growing importance of climate risk management in banking. He pointed out regulatory frameworks, including the Network for Greening Financial System (NGFS) guidelines and Basel Committee on Banking Regulations recommendations, urging banks to adopt a comprehensive strategy for climate risk management to remain resilient in the face of evolving challenges.
The webinar also hosted Kuben Naidoo, former Deputy Governor, South African Reserve Bank; Ma Jun, Founder and Chair, Institute Finance and Sustainability (China); Anushka Bogdanov, Founder and Chair, Risk Insights; Viral Acharya, professor at NYU-Stern and former Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India; Raul Vera Bogado, former President, Central Bank of Paraguay; Andrey Bogdanov, Interim CEO, Risk Insights; Kirill Ilinski, Managing Partner, Fusion Group (UK).
