NES hosted lectures by renowned economists from the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics

On September 9, NES hosted its first public event of the academic year. The attendees had an opportunity to listen to two lectures delivered by the Rector and Vice-Rector from the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE): a public policy expert Nadeem Ul Haque, the Vice-Chancellor at PIDE and Chairperson of the RASTA Research Advisory Committee, and Durre Nayab, Joint Director and Pro Vice-Chancellor at PIDE. NES Rector Anton Suvorov moderated the meeting.

The lecture by Dr. Nadeem Ul Haque “Chicago Economics in Action: From Nobel Laureates to Global Policy Impact” explored how global policy was influenced by the economic theories and debates from the University of Chicago – alma mater to many Nobel Prize Winners. The talk featured insights into how these principles have been applied to real-world challenges in Pakistan, and why they are important for the future of economics.

Dr. Durre Nayab presented her research “Economics Meets Demography: Unveiling the Hidden Value of Women's Work in Developing Economies". The talk focused on the intersection of economic policies and demographic shifts in developing countries, with a special emphasis on the role of women's non-market work in the economy. Dr. Nayab discussed how integrating gender into economic models can lead to more effective and equitable policies for developing countries.
