NES professor Andrei Markevich became a co-author of a chapter for The Cambridge Economic History of the Modern World, dedicated to the period of the beginning of modern economic growth, which originated in Great Britain and then took place in other parts of the world.
Together with Giovanni Federico, Andrei Markevich examines how this growth spread from the British Isles following the 18th century Industrial Revolution to continental Europe and initiated the Great Divergence, a shift in which the Western world overcame pre-modern growth constraints and emerged as the most powerful and wealthy world civilization.
The book offer a series of regional studies from around the world, as well as thematic analyses of key factors governing the differential outcomes in different parts of the global economy. Topics covered include population and human development, capital and technology, geography and institutions, living standards and inequality, international flows of trade and labour, the international monetary system, and war and empire.
