NES speakers discussed long-term development of Eastern Europe at the Stockholm conference


NES rector Ruben Enikolopov made a presentation on the topic of “Political Effects of the Internet and Social Media" elaborating on how social media expansion influences the political process. 

Professor at NES Gerhard Toews told about a long-term impact of the forced relocation of the 'enemies of the people' in the USSR as part of his report on “The Historical Legacy Enemies of the People”.

NES alumni and professor at TU Dortmund University Galina Zudenkova (MAE'2004) studied how available communication channels can affect protests and state censorship rates and shared her findings in the report “Information and Communication Technologies, Protests, and Censorship”. NES graduate and professor at George Mason University (MAE'2012) presented her paper on the topic of “Economic Consequences 1933 Soviet Famine”. Moreover, another NES alumni also took part in the event. Professor at CERGE-EI Vasily Korovkin (MAE'2012) told about the impact of conflict on trade in non-conflict areas.

Sergey Guriev, former NES rector (2004-2013) and, currently, professor at Science Po was among the speakers and shared his views on how processes of globalization, automatization, as well as financial crisis, and availability of Internet could lead to the growth of populism. 

Annual Academic Conference at the Stockholm School of Economics took place on December 16, 2019, and brought together researchers in economics and political science who contribute to the understanding of the political economy of Eastern Europe.
