NES XLII Scientific Conference -2018


 At the XLII Scientific Conference on November 29-30, there were six sessions and the keynote talk.

In the first session, on microeconomic theory, NES Professors Ozgur Evren and Andrei Savochkin talked about decision theory while NES Professors Ethymios Athanasiou and Alexey Kushnir presented papers on the mechanism design.

The second session was devoted to macroeconomics. NES Professor Valery Charnavoki presented an econometric model of the effects of the monetary policy. NES Professor Gerhard Toews talked about the Dutch disease following giant discoveries of oil and gas reserves. NES Professor Konstantin Egorov talked about the world where the prices are set in dollars.

The third session featured four presentations on organization of markets and firms. NES Professor Marta Troya Martinez explained why a good relationship may feature kickbacks typically associated with corruption. NES Professor Sergey Izmalkov presented a new model of spatial competition. NES Professor Daria Dzyabura prepared a talk about how an intermediary should rank products for the consumers. In the last presentation of the day, NES Professor Mikhail Drugov presented new general results on tournaments.

The second day of the conference started with the session on political economy. NES Rector Ruben Enikolopov talked about the influence of social media on xenophobia in Russia. NES Professor Michele Valsecchi showed the effects of the recent sanctions and countersanctions on voting behavior in Russia. NES Professor Andrey Markevich studied the determinants of the voting behavior in the Constituent Assembly Elections at the end of November 1917.

The second session on Friday was on finance. NES Professor Pavle Radicevic presented a model where benefits of corporate control discipline the managers. NES Professor Hosny Zoabi explained why risk aversion may explain the very low take up of microfinance loans in developing countries. NES Professor Carsten Sprenger showed characteristics of the CEOs of the 400 largest companies in Russia. NES Professor Anna Obizhaeva presented a model of financial markets where traders are mistaken about the correlation of their private information.

The third session of the day was devoted to labor and econometrics. NES Professor Evgeny Yakovlev talked about sex ratio in Russia. NES Professor Olga Kuzmina showed how labor contracts affect innovation. NES Professor Stanislav Anatolyev presented a new test for weak instruments.

The conference finished on Friday evening with a keynote talk by Jean-Marie Dufour, a leading econometrician from McGill University. He talked about making robust inference in dynamic structural equations. This is of first-order importance in empirical macroeconomic models of which he presented an example.
