NES Professor Natalya Volchkova has been reelected as one of 24 international experts to the Committee for Development Policy (CDP). She will serve personally for a three-year term, starting January 1, 2025, and ending December 31, 2027.
The Committee for Development Policy, a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), advises the Council on a wide range of issues that are relevant to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The CDP meets once a year at the Plenary and subsequently submits its report to ECOSOC. Detailed analysis and recommendations by the CDP are available in various publications.
Every three years the CDP reviews the least developed country (LDC) category and recommends to ECOSOC and the UN General Assembly which countries should be included in or graduated from the list. The review is based on quantitative criteria developed by the CDP and country-specific additional information. The CDP also monitors countries that are graduating or have graduated from the LDC list and alerts ECOSOC of any sign of deterioration of their development progress.
Natalya Volchkova is the rapporteur on the issue of Nepal's graduation from the least developed country category. At the latest Committee meeting in March 2024, she presented the results of consultations held over the past year with representatives of the Nepalese government. Following the discussion, recommendations were issued for ECOSOC covering a wide range of the discussed issues. In November, 2024 she participated in CDP consultations with the government of Nepal on ensuring a smooth transition process.
