NES Professor Natalia Volchkova Took Part in the 25th Plenary Session of the UN Committee for Development Policy

The twenty-fifth anniversary meeting of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP) of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) took place on February 20-24. ECOSOC President Luchezara Stoeva and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua opened the event, which discussed and prepared recommendations on a range of topics, such as a “fair transition” to a low-carbon global economy, the intensifying debt problems of poor countries in the context of the coronavirus pandemic and armed conflicts, and improving the quality of preparation of Voluntary National Reviews on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

For five days, the Committee members worked together to recommend criteria for classifying countries as least developed. They then outlined the necessary measures and procedures to ensure a smooth exit of countries from this category and also prepared for next year's triennial consultations on these issues, which are traditional for the work of the Committee.

Natalia Volchkova is the coordinator of the CDP of Nepal's graduation from the category of least developed countries. During the plenary session, she presented the results of consultations with representatives of the Nepalese Government conducted during the past year.

Based on the discussions of its work, the Committee ultimately formulated recommendations for the ECOSOC, which were presented to the Council President during a joint meeting that concluded the plenary session.
