MIPT and NES Launch Bachelor's Program to Train Professionals for FinTech and Specialists in Data Science

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), with the participation of NES, is launching a new undergraduate program “Applied Mathematics and Informatics: Data Analysis, Economics and Finance”. It will be aimed at training data scientists with strong skills in the field of economics, professionals for the FinTech industry and founders of innovative startups.
The labor market is increasingly demonstrating a demand for young professionals combining competencies in the field of economics and finance with computer science skills. The new program is a response to the challenges of a rapidly changing world. The agreement on its launch and on educational cooperation was signed by MIPT Rector Dmitry Livanov and NES Rector Ruben Enikolopov.
The program will be based on the academic and teaching expertise of NES, which ranks first among Russian universities in the Tilburg University ranking in terms of the number of publications in leading specialized international journals, and the “Applied Mathematics and Informatics” program of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, a leader in mathematics and computer science (MIPT ranks 1st in Russia and 72nd globally in the of Times Higher Education | Computer Science ranking).
The bachelor's program will become another attractive option for continuing education for the winners of the All-Russian and other Olympiads in mathematics and computer science and is guaranteed to improve the professional level of future specialists in the academic field and in the real sector of the economy. It will meet the demand of Russian school graduates who are interested in obtaining a high-quality education in mathematics and its applications with transparent career prospects.
“Recently, we have seen a high and still growing demand for professionals who not only know how to use the most modern mathematical methods, but also can correctly apply these methods to solve problems in the economic and other fields. These are the people we want to train in the program. I would also like to point out that NES and MIPT have a rich history of relations: we can recall, for example, the fact that MIPT graduate Sergey Guriev was the rector of the New Economic School for a long time. And today we are happy to renew our cooperation, in which MIPT students will be able to attend our courses,” NES Rector Ruben Enikolopov said.

“The agreement between MIPT and NES is a natural and expected development of cooperation between the two leading Russian universities. The first results of our cooperation will be new educational tracks, and the beneficiaries of the collaboration will be students with a strong mathematical background who will find applications for their talents in the field of economics and finance. We are confident that this is just the beginning of a path that will find development in joint applied and fundamental research,” Dmitry Livanov, Rector of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, commented.
The program will allow students to consciously plan their career paths already at the stage of undergraduate studies, focusing on the development of the industry and the experience of graduates who graduated from MIPT and NES in different years and today occupy senior positions in various sectors of the economy or develop their own startups. They are, for example, Skyeng Chief Strategist Vladimir Gusev, Mercaux founder Olga Kotsur, CEO and co-founder of the Dbrain blockchain platform Dmitry Matskevich, Genesis IT company founder Vladimir Mnogoletny, head of Skolkovo Ventures Vladimir Sakovich, Taiger senior vice president Mark Shmulevich, Revolut founder Nikolai Storonsky, CEO of Bravy.com (ex-CEO of Uchi.ru) Ekaterina Zotova and others. MIPT and NES hold leading positions in the rating of entrepreneurial universities and business schools of the Expert AC in terms of the number of startups founded by graduates, the share of supported projects, and the amount of raised funds.
The curricula of the new program include a large block of disciplines of the MIPT Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics – mathematics, computer science, data analysis and their applications, as well as fundamental and applied courses in economics and finance, including a set of courses from the NES master’s program “Master of Arts in Economics". Within the scope of educational collaboration, introductory courses in economics and finance from NES professors will be open to students of all MIPT departments.
“Our core program “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science” traditionally produces very strong professionals in the field of mathematics, computer science and their applications, including data analysis, machine learning and software development. However, the rapid development of FinTech requires specialists to have deeper fundamental knowledge in the field of economics and finance in order to create breakthrough financial technologies. We have added courses from the NES master's program to our undergraduate program. Almost half of the NES master's program will be available to our students. And it will give the very fundamental knowledge that is so necessary for building a successful career in FinTech,” Andrey Raigorodsky, director of the MIPT Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics, said.
Enrollment for the program will begin in 2022, and the program “Applied Mathematics and Informatics: Data Analysis, Economics and Finance” will be available to all applicants within the terms of the MIPT undergraduate admission rules. It is important to note that starting 2022, the university has significantly increased the minimum passing scores (in core subjects up to 85 points and up to 70 points in the Russian language), which guarantees a high entrance level of first-year students and will allow teaching general and special courses at a more advanced level.
